Travel from Sorrento to Herculaneum and enjoy a guided tour of this ancient town which, along with its neighbour Pompeii, was preserved beneath a layer of lava, mud and ash when Mt Vesuvius erupted in 79AD.
You’ll leave Sorrento and travel along the gorgeous coastal road which takes you through Castellammare di Stabia to Herculaneum.
A residential town without the commercial wealth or importance of Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried beneath a flow of lava and mud when Mt Vesuvius erupted without warning centuries before.
Like its larger neighbour Pompeii, Herculaneum was largely preserved by the tufa (a type of course rock) which resulted when the material from the eruption cooled and hardened.
So well preserved are parts of Herculaneum that many household objects can still be seen today.
The town was rediscovered back in 1709, and excavations continue today to uncover the treasures which lie beneath, forever frozen in time.
*The entrance fee into the Herculaneum ruins is not included with your ticket.
